Went to the movies with Heather to see Pedro Almodovar's Mal Education. Unfortunately, we got there a bit late and the only seats available were in the front row but, we sat there without complaint as this movie immediately commanded our rapt attention. As always, I am blown away by Almodovar's ability to induce sympathy for the psychopaths, low lifes and criminals who frequent his films. Gael, Banderas in Atame and Camara in Habla Con Ella are prime examples. The music in this film is quite moving as it reminds me of the torch songs my aunts would sing along with in the late sixties. The soundtrack includes Spanish versions of Moon River and Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (I'm a sucker for standards.)
At bit later, at Kramer Books & Afterwords, Heather commented that this is a departure for Almodovar's from his other films as he didn't feature a female protagonist. The story line featured relationships between boyhood friends, a pedophilic priest and an altar boy, brothers, business partners, and lovers of various degrees. Oh yeah, there was a lot kissing, boinking and bonding but, I guess I'm really comfortable in my skin because it never occurred to me that they were gay relationships ... just relationships.
