gay toons

First, Bert and Ernie raised eyebrows, then Tinkie Winkie's purple man-bag came into question, and now Buster, Shrek, and Sponge Bob Squarepants have managed to rankle Christian fundamentalists. The creators of these shows never intended to promote a sexual agenda; I'm sure their goals centered around educating and entertaining children. So why do Christian fundamentalists expend so much energy outing cartoon characters when there are many more important issues to tackle?

Sue, a close friend, and my honey are avid cartoon watchers and they have never noticed any homosexual subtext in their favorite shows (Arthur, Sponge Bob, Fairly Odd Parents). As an adult, I rarely watch cartoons, but when I was a kid, there was one show that spoke to my inner yearnings (not that I knew I had inner yearnings).

My favorite cartoon of all time is Jonny Quest, which originally aired in the '60s and then again in the '70s in reruns. JQ had the perfect formula for success; two adults, two preteens and one dog, all male, traveling around the world getting into all sorts of mayhem.

My favorite character was Race Bannon who was Jonny's twenty-four hour tutor, companion, and all-around watch-dog. Jonny was the luckiest boy in the world and I so wanted to be him.

Now that I am an adult, I know it was silly to want to be Jonny when Dr. Quest was in a much better position to explore his relationship with Race Bannon. All that time on a boat together with no women. Was it clothing optional? How many beds were there? Did they visit whore houses together? All questions I want to answer.

For many men my age, Race was their first crush. So how did Race escape scrutiny from the sixties' fundamentalists? What were they focused on? Important things like ... Questioning racial equality? Fighting for women's equal rights? Ending the war? Or were they focused on really important things like ... Why did Oscar spend so much time in an alley? Bullwinkle's leftist leaning? Fred, Shaggy, Thelma and Daphne practicing free love in a traveling van?
